Narrative |
| The renovations of the Adison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy will include installation of a 2,536-square-foot green roof over the storage and preservation area, to be completed in the spring of 2010. The roof will be planted with the low-growing succulent sedum plant, which blooms in late summer to early fall. It will comprise a little more than 36% of the new roof area.
According to Director of Facilities Michael Williams, the advantages of the roof are numerous: "It helps manage stormwater runoff, it improves a building's energy performance, it can double or triple a roof's lifespan, and it takes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and returns oxygen, which contributes to a healthier environment overall."
Andover town Officials hope the roof will serve as a prototype, and hope its installation will spark interest among others in the Merrimack Valley.
